[WordPress Blog Setup Series ③] Initial Security Setup and Boldly Skipping the AI Wizard
Once your domain and hosting server are connected as covered in Part 2, you’ll log into your hosting account for the first time to get ready to install WordPress. There are a few screens you’ll encounter along the way — skip past them carelessly and you might run into hassle later, so let’s go over them in this part.
Setting a Security PIN
When first setting up your hosting account, you’ll be asked to set a 6-digit PIN used for identity verification during support calls or live chat.
- Avoid sequential or repeated numbers that are easy to guess (e.g., 123456, 111111).
- This PIN will be used as an identity verification method for future account-related inquiries, so make sure to record it somewhere safe so you don’t forget it.
- The same applies to both domain and hosting accounts — it’s safer to enable security features like two-factor authentication (2FA), domain lock, DNSSEC, and login alerts wherever possible. 2FA in particular is considered a baseline requirement offered by most reputable registrars and hosting providers.
Boldly Skip the AI Auto-Generation Wizard
When first logging into your Bluehost account or connecting your site, you may run into an AI Site Creator step that forcibly generates unnecessary layouts or fake content.
It’s best to skip this wizard. Here’s why:
- The dummy pages, sample images, and placeholder text the wizard auto-generates often pile up in your WordPress backend.
- Deleting these dummy files one by one later can actually be more of a hassle.
- Skipping the complicated wizard keeps your WordPress admin screen clean, letting you build things exactly the way you want from the start.
Confirming WordPress Installation Is a Must
If you skipped the wizard, it’s important to first confirm that WordPress has actually been installed before moving to the next step.
- Most hosting providers offer a 1-Click WordPress Install feature. Bluehost, Hostinger, and others often prompt this automatically during sign-up.
- Check your hosting dashboard for a “WordPress Installed” status or similar confirmation.
- If you try accessing the admin address (
/wp-admin/) before installation is complete, you’ll just see an error page — so don’t skip this confirmation step. - If you can’t find the one-click install option, look for a “Websites” or “My Sites” menu in your hosting dashboard and find a “Create Site” option to explicitly select and install WordPress.
Common Pitfalls at This Stage
- Some people click “Next” repeatedly without knowing what to select in the wizard screens, ending up with an unwanted template applied once installation finishes. Don’t panic if this happens — you can always reorganize the theme and pages later.
- PINs and security question answers set during this process are easy to forget right afterward, so it’s a good habit to record them in a password manager or a secure note.
